A mattress is something you’ll use every night for years, so it’s worth a few minutes of questions before you pay. Take this checklist with you to the shop, or keep it open on your phone.
10 questions to ask
- What size do I need? Measure your bed frame and room first. Check whether you want single, double, queen or king.
- How firm is it? Ask where it sits on the maker’s scale, then test it yourself.
- What is it made of? Foam, pocket springs, open coils or a hybrid? Ask about foam density or spring count.
- How thick are the comfort layers? Thin layers over a hard base can feel fine in the shop but flatten fast.
- Will it suit my sleeping position? Lie down for at least ten minutes in your usual position.
- Does it sleep cool? Ask about breathable covers and materials, especially for hot summers.
- How long is the warranty, and what does it cover? Ask how much sagging counts as a fault.
- Is there a home trial or exchange? Get the terms in writing.
- Is delivery and removal of my old mattress included?
- Does my bed base suit it? Some mattresses need solid or closely spaced slats to keep the warranty valid.
Before you pay
Keep your receipt and warranty card together, note the model name, and register the warranty if the maker asks you to. Then use a mattress protector from the first night to keep it clean and protect your warranty.
